Ian Johnson, B.Eng.(Hons)

IJPhoto0304Ian is the founder of IJCAD Services.

Born and raised in Barrow-in-Furness, Ian joined the local shipbuilding firm, V.S.E.L., directly from school in 1984.  Although initially employed as a fitter/turner apprentice, he was quickly reassigned to be an engineering apprentice and after completing his apprenticeship years became a draughtsman. In 1988, he began a university course in Mechanical Engineering at Salford University and was awarded 1st Class Honours in 1992. In September 1992, he returned to V.S.E.L. and worked for nearly four years within the Machinery and Systems section of the Engineering Design Department.

After V.S.E.L., Ian moved fields as well as homes on joining Bruce Anchor Ltd on the Isle of Man.  He spent 8 years at Bruce Anchor working within, and eventually being promoted to the head of the Drawing Office.  During that time he has worked on several of Bruce Anchor’s successful projects mainly dealing with new anchor design and high water pressure housings for electronic equipment.

However, Ian decided in early 2004 that it was time to change jobs.  Liking the tranquility of the Isle of Man, he decided that he wanted to stay, and began looking at various options. The idea of being his own boss appealed to him, so after some consideration, he formed IJCAD Services.

Although running the company takes up much of his time, his other interests are far-reaching and many.  He practices Karate, listens to many different types of music and does a prodigious amount of reading. He has created and maintains this web site and has authored a number of DVDs of events and tournaments for his Karate club using a digital camera and computer software.

Computers have always been of interest to Ian, ever since he was introduced to working with them as part of his industry placement in 1989. He has specified, sourced and built the computer system within the office and has identified and installed a number of upgrades to the machines over the months.

He is currently completing an Open University degree in Mathematics
